Whether you’re buying British meat and produce for yourself or for your pets, the ethos is still the same. Choosing British means supporting British farmers whose work helps to keep the British countryside the way we want it to look.
The food you buy can have an impact on the environment by way of its carbon footprint. British food travels less meaning it has a lower carbon footprint than many imported foods. It can also do wonders for your health – eating fruits and vegetables in season is good for you as they contain nutrients, minerals and trace elements that our bodies need at particular times of the year.
As well as supporting the economy, British meat is produced to some of the highest welfare standards in the world. Unlike meat farmed in other parts of the world, no growth-promoting hormones are allowed and any antibiotics are administered only under veterinary direction.
Look out for the Red Tractor logo. You can be assured that meat carrying this logo has been produced to a high set of standards covering every stage of the food chain from rearing to processing and can be traced back to the farm it came from. This logo can’t be displayed on pet food packaging, but rest assured, there are some quality pet treat manufacturers who will be sourcing this meat to make their lovely products (yes that’s us!).
Here at The Innocent Hound, we carry out an in-depth supplier approval process so we can be confident the meat we buy is not only British, but it has been reared to the highest welfare standards.
British Food Fortnight might be drawing to an end, but let’s not forget what this is all about. There are plenty of reasons why we should be buying British – for the health of our economy, the health of our countryside, and of course, the health of our hounds!
